My ancestor is Buford Kay of Virginia, born around 1819/1820, presumably in Bedford County, and who married Frances Dearen, for whom there's considerable ancestry material. Going earlier than that for the Kays has been a frustrating effort. Records are remarkably sparse for this family. My assumption is that they were of "cohee" ilk, probably not landowners and generally off the census radar for a large part. The whole family apparently spelled their name "Cay" frequently in the early days. I found not only my Buford descendants, but also another family that I believe to be allied, the descendants of William B. Kay and Harriett PARKER. I believe these families to be related, but have no proof other than circumstantial evidence. I have constructed a conjectural relationship pattern for the early Cays to show this relationship, but it's based on very weak evidence at best. In addition to what's shown below, there was a Henry Kay who popped up in Pittsylvania County in the 1789 tax record. Occasionally, the name has been erroneously transcribed as Coy. There is a Wiliam Coy in the 1790 Amherst County tax record. There is an Anthony Coy in the 1810 US census for Amherst County. Then a Samuel P. Coy, wife Elizabeth, had a daughter Willie Ann Coy 14 May 1868 in Amherst County.
I suspect that most of the men's "B." middle names are "Buford." There's probably an important marriage early on between Kays and Bufords, but I haven't been able to find it.
Although some search engines freely conflate Kay with Key, I have never found one certain instance of crossover. Every Cay/Kay record I've found has been with an a, not an e.
There are various black Kays who show up in the same general area of Virginia after the Civil War, but I'm certain that these are former slaves from Kay plantations in eastern Virginia and North Carolina, with no known connections to the families treated here. Since these people were apparently not large landowners, it is unlikely that they were slaveholders.

Most of the following descendancy is pretty solid. The placement of William Kay born 1869, in the 1900 Roanoke census, is very uncertain. William who is presumed to be that person's father kind of disappears from the radar. However, Samuel and John's descendancies are well-established. Samuel moved to Ohio, and John moved to Missouri.

The presence of the John Kay born 1855 in the list below threw me for some time, since my ancestor is also John Kay born 1855 and living in the same areas. I'm conjecturing that the two were perhaps second cousins. I've well established that the one showing up in the census as shown below is, in fact, the John V. B. Kay cited below. The children of Georgie Alice Kay, below, are apparently born out of wedlock, since she shows up as G. Alice Kay as a two-year-old. Most records found were of Oscar Thomas Kay, who moved to Oregon. There's been a lot of confusion about the name of William B. Kay (probably B. for Buford), cited variously as Nills, Wills, or V. B., but I found a definite statement in Georgie Alice Kay's death record that her parents are the couple shown below.
